don’t remember when or where I first heard Oceans by Hillsong United, but I do remember that it was one of the most beautiful songs that I had heard in a very long time. A few months ago, two close friends of mine decided to record a song and thought that it would be cool to cover Oceans. With the help of a couple more friends, including myself, this idea became a reality.
During my time at Ithaca, I have been seriously blessed to be surrounded by people who are not only ridiculously gifted, but also incredibly passionate. Luke, Kristine, and Jazon have become some of my closest friends here and being able to help with their project was an amazing experience. Together, each of us brought our own talent to the table. Luke is an amazing sound engineer and musician who took upon the task of recording the song live and mixing it together. Kristine shot and video edited the entire cover while Jazon did the electric and acoustic guitar portions and designed the video’s logo. Luke asked me if I would be interested in helping out with set decoration for the video and, of course, I said yes.
As an avid lover of acoustic sessions, I knew that I wanted to use as many lights as possible. On the way to the church, I grabbed about every empty cardboard box in my room along with all of the Mason jars that I own. (I have way more than a normal person should). I used the different sized cardboard boxes to elevate the jars at various heights and then draped the lights over the boxes and into the mason jars. For each shot, I played around with the layout and placement of the jars to help highlight whoever was in frame.
For future parties or events, I would love to further mess around with this idea. It’s so simple, extremely cost efficient, and does a great job of highlighting a space. In the future, I would love to see what would happen if I used even bigger boxes, more mason jars, even more lights, and maybe things like vintage books or picture frames. I have a feeling it would be pretty cool.
Ultimately, this project was more than just covering a song. It was a combination of talent and passion to show how beautiful and amazing our God truly is. With this mission, the project became so much more significant. In addition, it was incredibly ambitious for a first collaborative project, but God brought it all together. An incredible amount of time and love was put into this video by Luke and Kristine and I am so proud of how it turned out. I sincerely hope that you will be encouraged to let God take you deeper than your feet could ever wander because He will do that and so much more.
